Biography
Karol Stryja was a Polish conductor and teacher who was born in Cieszyn, Austria-Hungary, in 1915. He achieved early professional recognition in 1937 leading the Echo choir and is famous for his long tenure as the artistic director of the Silesian Philharmonic and for founding prestigious international music competitions. Stryja served as the artistic director of the Silesian Philharmonic in Katowice starting in 1953 and held the same position at the Odense Symphony Orchestra in Denmark between 1968 and 1983. In 1979, he established the Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors, followed by the Carl Nielsen International Violin Competition in 1980. His career included international tours of the United States, Japan, and Argentina. For his services to music, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta in 1995 and the Bulgarian Order of Saints Cyril and Methodius. Stryja died in Katowice in 1998.
