Biography

Julio Afredo Jaramillo Laurido, who went by the name Julio Jaramillo, was a prominent singer and guitarist from Ecuador who performed traditional Latin forms of music including boleros, tangos and rancheros. He began performing as a youth and released his first album, 'My Poor Dear Mother' with singer Fresia Saavedra in 1954. He released several other albums and became immensely popular across Latin America. Tracks included 'Fe verdadera', 'Nuestro Juramento' and 'Pasión de amor'. He collaborated with artists such as Alci Acosta from Colombia and Daniel Santos from Puerto Rico. He toured America, Canada and Mexico and had a regular radio show. He had several scandals involving the abuse of women and served time in prison. He suffered from cirrhosis and died in 1978 aged 42 following a gallstone operation.
