Biography
Josef Franz Wagner, also known as Josef Wagner, born on March 20, 1856, in Vienna, was an Austrian military bandmaster and composer. After completing his primary education at Henriette Kumenecker's singing school and secondary education at the Stiftsgymnasium in Seitenstetten, Wagner began composing early in life. His first work, "Dulde und verzage nicht", was composed in 1872. He joined the military band of the Austro-Hungarian army in 1874, serving as a bandmaster from 1878 until his death. During this period, Wagner composed numerous marches and other works, including his most famous piece, "Unter dem Doppeladler", published in 1893. This march became part of American composer John Philip Sousa's repertoire. Wagner also composed operettas, such as Herzbub (1895), Der Kognakkönig (1897), and Der Soubrettenjäger (1905). Wagner died on June 5, 1908, in Vienna.
