Johnny Clarke, born January 12, 1955, is a Jamaican reggae musician. Clarke grew up in the Kingston ghetto of Whitfield Town and attended Jamaica College. In 1971, he won a talent contest in Bull Bay, which led to a first recording, the single "God Made the Sea and the Sun" (1972), with producer Clancy Eccles the following year. Clarke's breakthrough came with the hits "Everyday Wondering" (1973) and "Julie" (1973), produced by Rupie Edwards. Clarke then collaborated extensively with Bunny Lee and the Aggrovators, releasing the successful debut album None Shall Escape (1974), which featured the hit "None Shall Escape the Judgement" (1974), and Enter Into His Gates with Praise (1975). Clarke was named Artist of the Year in Jamaica in both 1975 and 1976. Clarke signed with Virgin Records' Frontline subsidiary, releasing the albums Authorised Version (1976) and Rocker's Time Now (1976).
