Biography

John Littleton was an American singer and composer born on June 20, 1922, near Tallulah. He began performing in Baptist churches during his youth. Littleton relocated to Reims during his military service in France and subsequently studied at the Conservatoire national de Paris. He received first prizes in chant and opera. As an opera singer, he performed roles in the works Boris Godounov and Faust. In 1960, he turned his focus to negro spirituals and gospel music. Littleton released more than 75 recordings, including the album Amen. He collaborated with guitarist Mickey Baker for the studio recordings Spirituals (1971) and Folk Songs Around the World (1974). His awards included the Grand prix du disque Charles-Cros and the Légion d'honneur. Littleton died on August 24, 1998, in Reims.
