Biography
John Lewis Nelson was born on June 29, 1916 in Webster Parish, Louisiana. He moved to Minneapolis in 1948, adopting the stage name Prince Rogers and forming The Prince Rogers Trio. In 1957, he married jazz singer Mattie Della Shaw. His son, Prince (1958â2016), became a prominent musician. Nelson collaborated with his son on several notable songs in the 1980s, including "Fatherâs Song" and "Purple Rain Cues" from the film Purple Rain (1984) and "Computer Blue" from the album Purple Rain. He also co-wrote tracks for the albums Around the World in a Day (1985), Parade (1986), and Batman (1989). Nelson died on August 25, 2001.
