Biography

John Crofton Harle is an English saxophonist, composer, record producer, conductor and educator. He began his musical career as a clarinettist in the band of the Coldstream Guards from 1974 to 1977 and studied at the Royal College of Music in London, where he won the Dannreuter Concerto Competition in 1978 and graduated with exceptional distinction. Harle collaborated extensively with Michael Nyman’s band from 1979 to 2000 and served as Principal Saxophone of the London Sinfonietta from 1986 to 1995. He also composed the theme music for the BBC series Silent Witness and the score for A History of Britain (2000). He was awarded an OBE in 2025 for services to music and has served as the Director of The Guildhall Bauhaus and Professor of Music & Interdisciplinary Practice at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London.
