Biography

James Norman Scott, born on August 12, 1937, in Nashville, Tennessee, is an American singer and songwriter known for his contributions to jazz blues and soul music. He began his career as a touring musician throughout the Midwest and southern United States before settling in New York City, where he wrote music for Broadway and performed. In 1962, Scott released his biggest charting single, "I Don't Love You No More (I Don't Care About You)", which reached number 21 on the Billboard "Black Singles" chart and number 47 on the "Pop Singles" chart. His songwriting career took off when he composed additional lyrics for Kai Winding's "Time Is on My Side", which became a hit for The Rolling Stones in 1964. Scott also collaborated with Jimi Hendrix, recording several tracks together at Abtone Studio in New York. In 1968, Bob Marley visited Scott in his Bronx apartment, leading to a jam session that resulted in a rare tape of Marley performing several compositions. Scott later toured and recorded with The Coasters from the late 1960s until poor health forced him to retire in 1998. Despite financial struggles, he resumed performing with assistance from the Jazz Foundation of America and released his album Little Pieces in 2004. Scott continued to perform in the Manhattan area until shortly before his death on November 8, 2011.
