Jewlia Eisenberg, born in 1970 or 1971 in Brooklyn, New York, was an American singer and composer. Raised in Starrett City by communist parents, she began her musical journey under the influence of her musician mother. Eisenberg's early career took off at UC Berkeley, where she founded Charming Hostess. The band's eclectic style, which Eisenberg coined as "Nerdy-Sexy-Commie-Girly," was described as klezmer-punk and balkan-funk. Her first album with the group, Eat, was released in 1998. In 2002, she released her solo album Trilectic on John Zorn's Tzadik label, exploring themes such as the political/erotic nexus of Walter Benjamin and his Marxist muse. Eisenberg enjoyed a retreat as part of the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in 2006. She also received a Rockefeller Foundation Multi-Arts Production Fund Grant for "The Grim Arithmetic of Water" with aerial dance choreographer Jo Kreiter. She passed away on March 11, 2021, due to complications from GATA2 deficiency.
