Biography

Lee Denson, born Jesse Lee Denson on August 25, 1932, in Rienzi, Mississippi, was an American rockabilly musician. He grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, where he formed a close friendship with Elvis Presley and taught him his first guitar chords. In 1957, Denson made his first solo recordings for Vik Records, including “The Pied Piper” and Eddie Cochran's “Heart of a Fool.” He later signed with Kent Records, releasing songs such as "High School Hop / Devil Doll." Denson’s songwriting included “Miracle of a Rosary,” which Elvis Presley recorded for his 1971 album Elvis Now (released in 1972). Lee Denson passed away on November 6, 2007, in Memphis. His work was posthumously celebrated with the 2001 Hydra Records compilation The South’s Gonna Rise Again – Lee Denson AKA Jesse James.
