Jay Hooks, born on November 12, 1967 in Houston, Texas, is an American guitarist and songwriter. Inspired by fellow Texans Albert Collins, Billy Gibbons, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Hooks began his career playing in local bars before joining Lavelle White's backing band in the late 1980s. He gained national exposure during her tours in 1996. The following year, he released his debut album Hooked Up, recorded at SugarHill Recording Studios. This led to a contract with Provogue Records and the release of his self-titled album in 2000, produced by Ben Elliott. Hooks' Texas rock sound was well-received, leading to European tours in 2001. His subsequent albums include Red Line (2002), featuring "Freedom" a cover of Jimi Hendrix's track, and notable performances on German television show Rockpalast in 2003. Hooks continued performing at venues like the Continental Club in Austin and House of Blues in Houston throughout his career.
