Biography

Javad Maroufi (born 1912 in Tehran; died 7 December 1993) was an Iranian composer, pianist, and conductor. He began his musical education under his father, MusÄ Maroufi, before attending the Academy of Music at age 14. Under the direction of Ali-Naqi Vaziri and piano teacher Tatiana Kharatian, Maroufi studied Western classical works by composers such as Chopin and Beethoven while also mastering traditional Persian music. He established a reputation as one of the first musicians to write original Persian compositions specifically for the piano. His most celebrated works include "KhÄbhÄ-ye Tala'i" (also known as "Golden Dreams"), "Jila Fantasy", and "Ashura". Throughout his career, Maroufi was noted for integrating Western classical techniques with Iranian musical structures. He died in a Tehran hospital at the age of 81, leaving a legacy centered on the evolution of the Persian piano repertoire.
