Biography

Genre-mashing Belgium band Jaune Toujours was founded in Brussels in 1993 by singer and accordionist Piet Maris, who took inspiration from Slovakia's Roma music while drawing influence from a disparate array of genres and styles including salsa, Latin, reggae, ska, rock, punk and groove. After finalising the line-up with drummer Théophane Raballand, bassist Mathieu Verkaeren, clarinettist and saxophonist Mattias Laga and trumpeters Bart Maris, Dirk Timmermans, and Yves Fernandez-Solino, the group recorded their debut EP O in 1998. Their first full-length LP Brusk (Choux de Bruxelles) followed in 2000, doubling up as the name of their artist collective. In 2002 they reached an international audience with their second album Camping del Mundo, and grew more interest with their third album Barricade in 2004. Over the next decade, they turned in a string of shapeshifting releases that included a 2012 collaborative EP the Gangbé Brass Band from Benin, titled Afrobelbeat, and celebrated their twentieth-ish anniversary in 2016 with the collector’s boxset and album Jaune Toujours 20sth. Their sixth studio album Europeana (Choux de Bruxelles) arrived in 2018 followed by a collaboration with the Brussels Philharmonic in 2019 called "Ici Bruxelles."
