Biography
J. Brown, born John Brown in Detroit, Michigan, is an American R&B singer and songwriter. Growing up as the youngest of five children, he found his passion for music early on, singing in his father's church choir. Brown's musical tastes were shaped by iconic artists like Usher, Jay-Z, Jimi Hendrix, Nas, and Sting and during his high school days, Brown, along with Robert Curry and two other singers, formed the group E2G. They were signed to Clef Records/J Records after auditioning for Wyclef Jean of the Fugees, but the group eventually disbanded. Pursuing a solo career, in 2018, J. Brown's debut single "Sunrise Sunset" reached number 10 on the Adult R&B Billboard Charts, giving him the opportunity to perform as supporting act for myriad artists including Trey Songz, Ruben Studdard, and Lil Boosie, as well as sharing the stage with Stevie Wonder later in 2019. His EP Forever Yours, released on January 24, 2020, featured the lead single "Moon," which reached number 7 on the Adult R&B Billboard Charts. In 2022, Brown released his debut solo album Chapter & Verse with lead singles "Vibe" and "Don't Rush" landing at number 10 and 11, respectively. In 2023, J. Brown released debut studio album The Art of Making Love, bringing forth a sound that resonates with the classic R&B era, with album single "My Whole Heart" reaching the 21st spot on the Top 30 Radio R&B chart in the U.S. Several singles followed in 2024, including "Move On", "Some Things I'll Never Know", and "Protect Your Heart", ahead of the release of the third full length Just a Matter of Time (2025), featuring collaborations with October London on the title track, M11ssion, and TheRing.
