Biography
Ishbel MacAskill, born Isabella Margaret MacAskill on 14â¯Marchâ¯1941 in Loanhead, near Edinburgh, United Kingdom, was a Scottish Gaelic singer and heritage activist. After moving to Stornoway at age 12, she studied Glasgow and married Bill MacAskill in 1964 before debut Nationalâ¯Mòd at age 38; performance attracted producer Noel Eadie launched her recording career. She released Leódhas mo ghrà idh in 1987, Sìoda in 1994, and Essentially Ishbel in 2000, featuring tracks such as "An Teid thu Leam a Mhairi" and "An Innis Aigh"; her work appeared on Transatlantic Sessions 2 (1999) and she also represented Scotland at Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 2003. MacAskill passed away on 31â¯Marchâ¯2011 after a fall in Inverness home.
