Biography

Intrigue, a Northern Saami heavy metal band, was formed in 1989 in Karasjok Municipality, Norway. The group consisted of lead songwriter and vocalist Kai Somby, guitarist Tore Skoglund, bass player Bengt Roger Kåven, guitarist Frank Rasmus, and drummer Knut Skoglund. Intrigue's musical journey began with the release of their self-titled debut album Intrigue in 1994. Throughout their career, Intrigue released several notable albums including Heavyjoik (2002), Crossover (2003), and Čappa nieida (2011). The band received significant recognition for their contributions to Sámi music. In 2003, they were honored with the Áillohaš Music Award, conferred by the Norwegian Sámi Association, Kautokeino Municipality, and the Kautokeino Sámi Association. Additionally, in 2009, Intrigue was awarded the Karasjok Cultural Prize. The band's lineup evolved over time, with members such as Øyvind Karlsen on drums, Frank Rasmus on bass, Tore Skoglund on guitar, Geir Karikoski on guitar, and Kai Somby on vocals. Intrigue's music often incorporated traditional Sámi elements, blending them with heavy metal to create a unique sound that resonated with both metal fans and those interested in Sámi culture. Their lyrics frequently addressed themes of identity, tradition, and the struggles faced by the Sámi people.
