Biography

In Essence, a Canadian R&B group based in Toronto, was formed in 1993 by lead singer Dru, Pops, Smooth, Que and Touch. Their debut single "You Will Never Find" was released in 1999 and included on The Mix Tape, Vol. IV (2000). The band met Funkmaster Flex during a trip to New York City, leading to their signing with Franchise Entertainment in 2001. In Essence subsequently signed with ViK Recordings / BMG Canada in 2003 and released their first album, The Master Plan, which featured the a cappella song "Who We Are". The following year, they won a Juno Award for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year for The Master Plan and an MMVA Award by MuchMusic for Best R&B Video of the Year for "Friend of Mine". Dru later pursued a solo career.
