Biography
Hurrah! was a British jangleâpop group formed in the early 1980s by guitaristâvocalist Paul Handyside, guitaristâvocalist David âTaffyâ Hughes, bassist David Porthouse, and drummer Mark Sim, who was soon replaced by Damien Mahoney and later by Steve Price and Adrian Evans. The bandâs breakthrough came with the 1982 debut single "The Sun Shines Here" on Kitchenware Records, followed by the 1983 hit "Hip Hip" which reached number 21 on the UK Indie chart, and the 1984 single "Who'd Have Thought" that climbed to Number 7. In 1985 the compilation Boxed was issued, and in 1986 Hurrah! signed to Arista through Kitchenware, releasing Tell God I'm Here (reâissued 1987) and the single "Sweet Sanity", which peaked at Number 83 in the UK. The band toured extensively, supporting the Stranglers in 1987, opening for U2 at Wembley, and performing in the Middle East under the Arts Council. Their second majorâlabel album, The Beautiful (1989), produced by Simon Hanhart and Chris Kimsey, yielded the single "Big Sky". After a final single in 1991, the group disbanded; a retrospective The Return of the Cool was released in 2010.
