High Inergy was an American R&B and soul girl group formed in 1976 in Pasadena, California, comprising Vernessa Mitchell, Barbara Mitchell, Linda Howard, and Michelle Martin. Discovered by Gwen Gordy Fuqua during a Bicentennial show, the group signed to Motown's Gordy subsidiary in 1977. Its breakthrough debut album, Turnin' On (1977), featured the hit single âYou Can't Turn Me Off (In the Middle of Turning Me On)â, which peaked at number 2 on the R&B chart and reached number 12 on the U.S. pop chart. In 1978, the group released the single âLove Is All You Needâ. Its 1980 album, Hold On, included the track âHold On to My Loveâ featuring Switch's Bobby DeBarge, who also produced and co-wrote the song. The group's final album, Groove Patrol (1983), featured collaborations with Smokey Robinson, who performed two duets with Barbara Mitchell. High Inergy disbanded in 1984 as the members pursued solo careers. Linda Howard passed away on December 9, 2012.
