Biography

Hi Rhythm was an American music group from Memphis, Tennessee, formed in the late 1960s. The band initially included the Hodges brothers—Charles on organ, Leroy on bass, and Mabon "Teenie" on guitar—and later added pianist Archie Turner (or Michael Allen) and drummer Howard Grimes (or Al Jackson Jr.). They served as the house band for Willie Mitchell's Hi Records label, contributing to hit soul albums by artists such as Al Green and Ann Peebles. Their distinctive sound was crucial to the label's success in the 1970s, appearing on nearly 20 gold and platinum albums. In 1976, they released their own LP, On The Loose. After Hi Records was sold in 1977, the band dissolved but regrouped for tours in 1979 and throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. In 2016, Hi Rhythm was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.
