Biography

Electronic music adventurer Herbert (aka Matthew Herbert, born in Kent, UK in 1972) has maintained an inventive track record in spite of his popularity and commercial success. Herbert—who has also made music under the aliases of Doctor Rockit, Radio Boy, Mr. Vertigo, Transformer, Wishmountain and his full name of Matthew Herbert—began drawing attention for his innovations around the release of his 1998 trailblazing album Around the House, which turned the sounds of everyday objects into songs. 2001 album Bodily Functions followed a similar path with human hair, skin and bodily organs being woven into sounds. 2006 album Scale proved a commercial success, making it to number 20 on Billboard's electronic music album chart. In 2009, Herbert wrote and produced the music accompanying the 42 "postcards," short films introducing the country being represented next in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest. Beginning in 2010, Herbert released two of a three-part trilogy of albums, with the third part of the trilogy, 2011's One Pig, courting controversy on account of its theme and recorded material; the life cycle of a farmed pig. Since 1996, Herbert has released numerous EPs, and March 2015 marked his first dance album as Herbert in nine years, The Shakes. He returned as Herbert six years later with Musca, later joining forces with drummer/ vocalist Momoko Gill for the Clay album in 2025.
