Biography

Helen Kate Shapiro, born on 28 September 1946 in Bethnal Green, London, is a British pop and jazz singer and actor. Raised in a Clapton council flat in the London Borough of Hackney, her early musical training included singing lessons at the Maurice Burman School of Modern Pop Singing. Her breakthrough came in February 1961 when she released her first single, "Don't Treat Me Like a Child", at age 14, which reached number three on the UK Singles Chart. Her subsequent singles "You Don't Know" and "Walkin' Back to Happiness" topped the chart in August and October 1961, respectively, both selling over a million copies. These successes led to film roles in Play It Cool and It's Trad, Dad!. In 1963, she toured with The Beatles, who were her supporting act on their first national tour. Her final UK Top Ten hit single was "Little Miss Lonely" in 1962. By the late 1960s, her pop career began to decline with the rise of beat music.
