Biography

The Japanese singer, actor, and photographer Haruma Miura was born on April 5, 1990, in Tsuchiura, Ibaraki. While still a child, he made his acting debut in 1997's TV drama Agri, but it was his starring role in the 2007 film Koizora that turned him into a household name. Miura's appearance in Koizora earned him the "Newcomer of the Year" award at the 31st Japan Academy Prize. He branched out into theater, too, eventually landing a role in the Japanese production of Kinky Boots in 2016. Featuring songs written by Cyndi Lauper, Kinky Boots helped launch Miura's all-too-brief career as a pop singer. He released the single "Fight for Your Heart" in 2019, hitting number 6 on the Oricon Weekly Singles chart and number 4 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100. "Night Diver" followed in August 2020, reaching number 2 on both charts and becoming of the year's biggest singles in Japan. "Night Driver" also reached Number 1 on Japan's Top 100 YouTube Clips chart. The success was bittersweet, however, as "Night Diver" was released posthumously. Two months before its arrival, Miura was found dead in his hotel room on July 18, 2020, the victim of an apparent suicide. Another posthumous single, "One," followed in late 2020 but stalled on the charts, reaching number 67 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 before dropping off.
