Biography

The Hart Valley Drifters were an American folk music band from the United States, active during the 1960s. The group included Jerry Garcia on banjo and guitar, Robert Hunter on bass, David Nelson on guitar, Ken Frankel on banjo and fiddle, and Norm Van Maastricht on Dobro. They recorded their debut album Folk Time in 1962 at KZSU studios, a radio station at Stanford University. The album was released by ATO Records on November 11, 2016. It featured traditional folk songs such as "Roving Gambler" and "Cripple Creek", showcasing Garcia's banjo skills and vocal abilities. The Hart Valley Drifters were part of the American folk music revival of the 1960s, with members later going on to form influential bands like the Grateful Dead and the New Riders of the Purple Sage.
