Biography

Old & In The Way was formed in 1973 in San Francisco, United States, by guitarist and vocalist Peter Rowan, fiddler Vassar Clements, banjoist and vocalist Jerry Garcia, mandolinist and vocalist David Grisman, and bassist John Kahn. The group quickly established a reputation for traditional bluegrass, performing pieces such as "Pig in a Pen" and bluegrass‑styled renditions of the Rolling Stones’ "Wild Horses" and Peter Rowan’s "Panama Red". The group played a total of almost fifty shows in 1973. The band’s self‑titled debut album was released in 1975. The group, without Jerry Garcia and John Kahn, released the reunion album Old & In the Gray in 2002. The band’s legacy endures through subsequent releases such as That High Lonesome Sound (1996) and Live at the Boarding House (The Complete Shows) (2013).
