Biography

Harold Ousley, born on January 23, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, was an American jazz tenor saxophonist and flutist. He began his career in the late 1940s, contributing to recordings by notable artists such as Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington (Sings Bessie Smith, 1957/58). In the 1960s, Ousley collaborated with Frankie Dunlop, Jack McDuff (Silken Soul, 1966), and George Benson. His first album under his own name, Tenor Sax, was released in 1961 on Bethlehem Records. Throughout the 1970s, he played with bands led by Lionel Hampton, Sy Oliver, and Count Basie, releasing several albums, including The Kid! (1972) and Sweet Double Hipness (1980). He passed away on August 13, 2015.
