Biography
Harmony Grass, formed in Essex, England, emerged from the earlier ensemble Tony Rivers & the Castaways, with founding members Tony Rivers (vocals), Ray Brown (bass), and others. In October 1968 the group rebranded as Harmony Grass, signing to RCA Records a year later; their breakthrough came with the single "Move In a Little Closer Baby", which entered the UK Singles Chart at number 24 in January 1969. The band released the album This Is Us in 1970 and toured the United Kingdom, performing at venues such as Londonâs Marquee Club. Subsequent releases included the singles "First Time Loving", "I Remember", and "Mrs. Richie". By late 1970 the group disbanded after Tony Rivers departed and was replaced by Joe Williams. Members continued in the music industry: Tony Ferguson and Kenny Rowe joined Capability Brown in 1973, and Tony Rivers contributed to projects with Brian Bennett, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, and Roger Daltrey. Tony Rivers passed away on 30 March 2026, aged 85, following a prolonged illness. The bandâs brief but chartâsuccessful career remains noted for its contribution to the sunshine pop scene of the late 1960s.
