Biography
Hans Sotin, born September 10, 1939 in Dortmund, Germany, is a German operatic bass. He studied at the Konservatorium Dortmund and made his debut in 1962 at the Grillo-Theater in Essen as Polizeikommissär in Richard Straussâ Der Rosenkavalier. Sotin received the Förderpreis des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen für Musik in 1963 and subsequently sang at the Hamburgische Staatsoper, where he was appointed Kammersänger. His international career included performances at the Wiener Staatsoper, the Bayreuth Festspiele, the Metropolitan Opera and La Scala. Notable roles included Gurnemanz in Parsifal, Wotan/Wanderer in Der Ring des Nibelungen, Baron Ochs von Lerchenau in Der Rosenkavalier and Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte. Sotin collaborated with prominent conductors including Herbert von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein. His discography includes recordings of works by Beethoven, Verdi, Wagner and Bach, as well as the Grammy Award-winning opera recording Lohengrin (1986).
