The Hank Mobley Sextet was a short-lived hard bop ensemble led by tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley in 1956. The group brought together rising jazz stars, including trumpeters Donald Byrd and Lee Morgan, and recorded two landmark albums for Blue Note: Hank Mobley with Donald Byrd and Lee Morgan, a November 25, 1956 session with Horace Silver, Paul Chambers and Charlie Persip, released in March 1957, then Hank, a meeting captured on April 21, 1957 in a different configuration with Donald Byrd, Bobby Timmons, Wilbur Ware and Philly Joe Jones for an album released in October 1957. Renowned for their warm, blues-tinged melodies, precise ensemble playing and inventive improvisation, the sextet captured the essence of hard bop, blending deep rhythms with sophisticated arrangements. Despite its short existence, the group remains an influential figure in the history of 1950s jazz.
