Biography

Gyða Valtýsdóttir (born January 5, 1982) is an Icelandic cellist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer from Reykjavík. Valtýsdóttir co-founded the experimental music group Múm in the late 1990s and performed on the albums Yesterday Was Dramatic – Today Is OK (1999) and Finally We Are No One (2002). She left the group in 2002 to study classical music, graduating from the Iceland University of the Arts in 2004 and the Musik Akademie, Basel in 2010. Valtýsdóttir released the single “Serenade Vapour” in 2013 and her solo album Epicycle in 2017, which won Album of the Year at the Iceland Music Awards. She followed this with the original compositions on Evolution (2018), the soundtrack Mihkel (2018), and Epicycle II (2020). In 2019, she received the Nordic Council Music Prize. Valtýsdóttir collaborated with artists including Josephine Foster, Damien Rice, and Kronos Quartet, and released the album Ox in 2021. Along with her twin sister, she appeared on the cover of the Belle and Sebastian album Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant.
