Biography

Gunnar Graps-Grāfs, known professionally as “Raudmees” (born November 27, 1951, in Tartu; died May 17, 2004, in Tallinn), was an Estonian vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and pioneer of hard rock in the former Soviet Union. Inspired by his father, Graps began studying cello at age six. He joined his first band, Satelliidid, as a guitarist in 1964 and performed as a drummer for Mikronid before forming Ornament in 1973. In 1976, he created Magnetic Band, which won first prize at the 1980 Tbilisi rock festival with the song “Lady Blues”. Following a 1983 ban by authorities, he formed GGG (Gunnar Graps Group), shifting toward heavy metal. The ensemble released the LP Põlemine in 1988. After a period in the United States and Sweden, Graps returned to Estonia in 1993. He received a lifetime achievement award at the 2004 Estonian Music Awards before dying of a heart attack that same year.
