Biography

Founded in Uruguay in 1969, jazz fusion band Opa was composed of brothers Hugo Fattoruso (keyboards and vocals) and George (a.k.a. Jorge) Fattoruso (drums) plus Hugo ‘Ringo’ Thielmann (bass). The trio relocated to New York in 1970 and were soon discovered by percussionist Airto Moreira. After playing on several albums by Moreira and his wife Flora Purim, Opa released their debut album, Goldenwings, in 1976, which was followed by Magic Time in 1977. Neither album was successful and the trio eventually broke up. Hugo Fattoruso moved to Brazil and his brother moved to Uruguay, both continuing their musical careers in different projects. Hugo Thielmann remained in the US but did not pursue music as a career. George Fattoruso died on July 29, 2012.
