Biography

Claire Boucher, aka Grimes, was raised in Vancouver's goth and industrial scenes, and started performing and recording while studying Russian language and neuroscience in Montreal. Drawing on a variety of influences from the punk of Blink 182 to 1990s R&B stars like Mariah Carey to the shoegaze Cocteau Twins, her early albums 'Geidi Primes' (2010) and 'Halfaxa' (2010) were initially given away on cassette and as free downloads as Grimes toured the country living in a tent and performing to handfuls of people. A deal with legendary indie label 4AD led to a growing buzz, before 'Visions' (2012) was released to huge acclaim from the critics. With its ethereal synth-pop, it was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize and came in second on NME's Albums of the Year list, while her single 'Oblivion' was named Best Song of 2012 by websites Pitchfork and PopMatters. Another track from the album, 'Genesis', was also commercially successful. After a hectic schedule of touring and writing for other artists, Grimes returned with her fourth studio album, 'Art Angels' in 2015 which includes the tracks 'Flesh Without Blood' and 'Kill V. Maim', alongside a collaboration with Janelle Monáe on 'Venus Fly'. The album hit number one on the Billboard Top Alternative Albums Chart, two on the Independent Albums Chart and 36 on the Billboard 200. In 2016, Grimes collaborated with Hana in 'The Ac!d Reign Chronicles', which saw both artists in seven videos of their own respective songs, with Grimes' instalments including 'Butterfly', 'World Princess Part II', 'Belly of the Beat' and 'Scream'. Two years later, she collaborated with Janelle Monáe once again on Monáe's track 'Pynk' and then on Bring Me the Horizon's 'Nihilist Blues'. Fifth studio album 'Miss Anthropocene' arrived in 2020 and includes the singles '4ÆM' and 'So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth'.
