Biography
Bluegrass jam band Greensky Bluegrass was formed in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 2000. Founded by Michael Arlen Bont (banjo), Paul Hoffman (mandolin) and Dave Bruzza (guitar), the group began playing open mic nights before assimilating themselves into the local bluegrass scene. The group added Chris Carr (bass) and Al Bates (dobro) to their lineup by the time they recorded their debut album, Less than Supper (2004). However, both Carr and Bates were only in the group a short time before they left, and Michael Devol (bass / cello) was brought in as a permanent member. After winning the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 2006, Greensky Bluegrass released their second album, Tuesday Letter. They added Anders Beck (dobro) to their lineup before releasing their third album, Live at Bellâs (2007). Greensky Bluegrass became a popular live act, sharing the stage with artists like Phil Lesh, Billy Strings, Yonder Mountain String Band, Railroad Earth, Bill Kreutzmann & Papa Mali, and many others. The group has continued to release acclaimed albums including Five Interstates (2008), Handguns (2011), If Sorrows Swim (2014), Shouted, Written Down & Quoted (2016), and Stress Dreams (2022). In 2025, Greensky Bluegrass released their 25th anniversary album XXV, which features guest appearances from Billy Strings, Nathaniel Ratliff, Sam Bush, and others.
