Biography
Grace Moore was an American operatic soprano and actress who was born in 1898. Known as the âTennessee Nightingale,â she achieved professional recognition for bringing opera to a wider audience through her work in musical theatre and film. After moving to New York City in 1919, she performed in nightclubs such as The Black Cat Café and made her Broadway debut in the musical revue Hitchy-Koo (1920). Moore made her operatic debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1928 as Mimì in Giacomo Pucciniâs La bohème. Her discography includes performances in the title roles of Tosca, Manon, and Louise, the latter of which was considered her greatest role. She is famous for her performance in the film One Night of Love (1934), which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Moore died in a plane crash in 1947.
