Biography

Grace Carter (born on May 26, 1997) is an English R&B singer-songwriter, mostly known for her 2017 viral single, “Silence.” A London native, Carter grew up in a single-parent household, an experience that is often present in her confessional lyrics. During her teenage years, she was encouraged by her stepfather to pick up the guitar and started writing her own songs inspired by the likes of Lauryn Hill and Nina Simone. Released in 2017, “Silence,” her debut single, quickly blew up online, accumulating millions of listeners across music streaming platforms. The single’s success garnered the attention of Dua Lipa, who invited Carter to be the opening act in The Self-Titled Tour that same year, exposing the singer to a wider audience. Preceded by lead single “Silhouette” and the title track, the EP Why Her Not Me (2018) led to a tour across the UK and Europe, and helped Carter reach Number 3 on BBC Music’s Sound of 2019 poll. Decided not to rest on her laurels, she followed up with the Chris Isaak's cover “Wicked Game” and “Fired up,” both of which amassed millions of streams in a relatively short period of time.
