Biography

Azerbaijan is one of those countries on the edge of Russia that is still little known in the West. Situated on the shores of the Caspian Sea, it is surrounded by Russia, Georgia, Armenia and Iran. The result of this proximity is an inevitably multifaceted culture, musically influenced by the Persian ghazal. Azeri music is dominated by the mugham, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. Representing the young mugham guard, singer Gochag Askarov contributed to his country's reputation in 2011 with the aptly named Mugham.
