Gloria Ann Taylor, is an American singer born on September 13, 1944 in Dehue, West Virginia. After growing up in Toledo, Ohio, she began performing in local clubs to support her young children after her mother's death. Her breakthrough came when Walter Whisenhunt, a promoter who had worked with James Brown, discovered her and became her manager and producer. Taylor's first records were released on the King Soul label before she achieved her biggest hit, "You Got to Pay the Price", in 1969 on Shelby Singletonâs Silver Fox label. The song reached number 9 on the Billboard R&B chart and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Her follow-up single, "Grounded", peaked at number 43 on the R&B chart in 1970. Taylor and Whisenhunt moved to California and recorded for Columbia Records, where she had her third chart hit with "Deep Inside You" in 1974. Later, they started their own label Selector Sound, releasing tracks like "Love Is A Hurtin' Thing". Despite critical acclaim, Taylor's career stalled by 1977, leading to her return to Toledo. She stopped performing professionally but later saw a resurgence in interest from collectors of rare groove soul and funk music. In 2015, Ubiquity Records reissued many of her recordings as Love Is A Hurtin' Thing. Taylor passed away on December 8, 2017 at the age of 73.
