Biography
Gershon-Yitskhok Leibovich Sirota, also known as Gershon Sirota, born in 1874, was a cantor. He began his career in Odessa before moving to Vilna, where he served as the cantor of the Shtatshul Synagogue. Sirota became the cantor at the TÅomackie Street Synagogue in Warsaw and began recording his music in 1907. His recordings were among the first Jewish records ever produced. He collaborated with choirmaster Leo Lowe and performed extensively throughout Europe and New York City's Carnegie Hall. Sirota left the TÅomackie Synagogue due to disputes over his frequent performances, but continued to live in Warsaw until World War II. He spent his final years in the Warsaw Ghetto and died during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943.
