Biography

Gerling was an Australian electronic alternative rock trio formed in 1993 in western Sydney, comprising Darren Cross on guitar and lead vocals, Paul Towner on drums, and Brad Herdson on guitar and vocals. The band began as a guitar‑pop trio, covering W.A.S.P. material before shifting to experimental guitar pop; their debut single, "Sedatives for Dead Radars", was issued in 1995 on the Fellaheen label, followed by the EP A Day of Research in 1996, which peaked at number 13 on the ARIA Alternative Albums Chart. After Herdson’s departure in 1997 and the brief involvement of Ben Lee, Canadian guitarist Burke Reid joined, solidifying the lineup that would produce the group’s first full‑length release, Children of Telepathic Experiences (1998), which reached number 21 on the ARIA Alternative Albums Chart and earned a nomination for Best Alternative Release at the 1999 ARIA Music Awards. The single "Enter, Space Capsule" (1999) showcased a deeper electronic direction and garnered a nomination for Breakthrough Artist – Single. In 2001 the album When Young Terrorists Chase the Sun entered the ARIA Albums Chart Top 50 and produced the Top 50 single "Dust Me Selecta" (2001). The band released Bad Blood!!! (2003) and 4 (2006) under Festival Mushroom and Warner Music Australia, respectively; "Turning the Screws" (2006) was the iTunes Featured Download of the Week. Gerling disbanded in 2007 and entered an indefinite hiatus, with members pursuing solo and production projects thereafter.
