Biography

A jazz bassist with a rich history of collaboration, sideman work, and solo material, Gerald Veasley was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on July 28, 1955. He performed with local R&B groups as a teenager before moving into jazz music, eventually landing a string of high-profile sideman gigs during the early 1980s. After working with jazz icons like Odeon Pope, John Blake Jr., and Grover Washington Jr., he spent seven years performing alongside Joe Zawinul in the Zawinul Syndicate, a jazz fusion group that evolved out of Zawinul's former group, Weather Report. Meanwhile, Veasley launched a solo career with 1992's Look Ahead and continued balancing his solo work with sideman opportunities during the following decades. releasing albums like 1997's Soul Control, 2008's Your Move, and 2011's Mingus Project along the way.
