George Johann Carl Antheil, born on July 8, 1900 in Trenton, New Jersey, was an American avant-garde composer and pianist. He began studying piano at age six and later received formal composition training under Constantine von Sternberg. In the early 1920s, Antheil moved to Europe, where he gained notoriety for his modernist compositions. His breakthrough work, Ballet Mécanique, premiered in Paris in 1926 and is notable for its use of mechanical instruments. Returning to the United States in the 1930s, Antheil composed music for films and television, which led to a more tonal style. He also collaborated with actress Hedy Lamarr on a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes, leading to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014. Antheil's notable albums include The Wish (1956). He passed away on February 12, 1959.
