Biography
Robert Nathan Sheff, known professionally as Gene Tyranny, was born on January 1, 1945, in San Antonio, Texas. He began his musical journey studying piano with Meta Hertwig and Rodney Hoare, and composition with Otto Wick and Frank Hughes. Tyranny's performance career started in high school, playing works by major composers such as John Cage. In the late 1970s, he toured with notable bands including the Carla Bley Band and Iggy & The Stooges. His debut album, Out of the Blue, was released in 1978. Throughout his career, Gene Tyranny collaborated with prominent artists like Laurie Anderson, David Behrman, John Cage, Peter Gordon, and Robert Ashley. He composed for various projects, including the opera Agamemnon. In 2020, a documentary film titled Just For The Record: Conversations With and About 'Blue' Gene Tyranny premiered at the TUSK Festival. Gene Tyranny passed away on December 12, 2020, in Long Island City, Queens.
