Biography
Gary Michael Kornbleit, known professionally as Gary Karr, was born on November 20, 1941, in Los Angeles, California, and was an American classical double bass virtuoso and academic teacher. His breakthrough came in 1962 when he performed as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Leonard Bernstein. He went on to perform with major orchestras worldwide and collaborated with composers such as Vittorio Giannini and Alec Wilder. He founded the International Society of Bassists in 1967, which promotes the study and advancement of the double bass. After a successful career spanning over four decades, he retired to Victoria, British Columbia, in 2001. He passed away on July 16, 2025, at the age of 83 due to complications from an aneurysm following a diagnosis of aggressive and inoperable cancer.
