Biography

The Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart, founded in 1954 at the Georgskirche in Gächingen by Helmuth Rilling, was a prominent choir based in Stuttgart. Initially focusing on a cappella music from the 16th, 17th, and 20th centuries, the ensemble expanded its repertoire to include Romantic works. In 1965, they began collaborating with the Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, shifting their focus to vocal-instrumental music of the 18th and 19th centuries. The choir's international tours included performances in Eastern Europe, the United States, Israel, Poland, and Moscow. Notable achievements include the worldwide first complete recording of all sacred cantatas and oratorios by Johann Sebastian Bach, released between 1970-1985. They also premiered works such as Arvo Pärt’s Litany (1994) and Wolfgang Rihm’s Deus Passus (2000). Under Hans-Christoph Rademann's leadership from 2013, the ensemble was renamed Gaechinger Cantorey in 2016 to include a newly formed Baroque orchestra.
