Biography
Gabriela Montero (born May 10, 1970) was a Venezuelan classical and contemporary classical pianist and composer from Caracas. Montero began playing the piano at age seven months and gave her first concerto debut at age eight with the National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London between 1990 and 1993 and won third prize at the XIII International Chopin Piano Competition in 1995. Montero released the debut album Piano Recital in 2005 and the album Bach and Beyond in 2006. In 2009, she performed the composition "Air and Simple Gifts" at the inauguration of Barack Obama. Montero won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Classical Album in 2015 for the album Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 2; Montero: Ex Patria, which featured her composition "Ex Patria". Montero released the Latin Concerto in 2019 and received the Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent in 2024.
