Biography

Franz Beckerlee, born on August 15, 1942, in Denmark, is a guitarist known for his work in jazz and jazz rock. He started playing alto saxophone at twelve and began his career in the early 1960s with Hugh Steinmetz and bassist Steffen Andersen. In 1964, they formed The Contemporary Jazz Quartet with drummer Sunny Murray. Beckerlee later created The Contemporary Jazz Quintet with saxophonist Niels Harrit, releasing an album in 1968. Inspired by Jimi Hendrix, he switched to guitar and founded the rock band Gasolin’ in 1969, which became popular in Denmark. The band released eight studio albums before Beckerlee left in the late 1970s to pursue a solo career, releasing No Kiddin’ in 1979. He also collaborated with Wild Honey and the Christianshavns Bluesband.
