François Carrier, born on June 5, 1961 in Chicoutimi, Quebec, is a Canadian saxophonist known for his jazz work. He began his musical journey in Vancouver in 1979 and later became a prominent figure in Montreal's jazz scene starting in 1982. François Carrier formed a trio with drummer Michel Lambert and bassist Pierre Côté in 1990, which gained international attention with the album Intuition in 1998. The following year, he founded the Nouvel Ensemble de Musique Improvisée (NoEMI), collaborating with notable artists such as Dewey Redman and Sonny Greenwich. In 2001, his trio's album Compassion won the Juno Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. François Carrier has released several acclaimed albums, including Travelling Lights (2004) featuring Paul Bley and Gary Peacock, and Japan Suite (2020). He received recognition as the best contemporary altsaxophonist in 2015 from the International Criticâs Poll of "El Intruso."
