Biography

Francisco Luis Rotundo was an Argentine tango pianist, composer, and conductor born on November 4, 1919, in Buenos Aires. He formed his first ensemble in 1937 and won a major orchestra competition at the Palermo Palace in 1944. Rotundo debuted his orchestra at the San José de Flores club during the 1945 Carnival, accompanied by moderator Carlos Waiss. His ensemble became renowned for featuring elite vocalists, including Floreal Ruiz, Enrique Campos, and Julio Sosa. He recorded extensively for the Odeón and Pampa labels, achieving success with compositions like “Un Infierno” and the duo hit “El Viejo Vals”. Due to his Peronist political ties and family business obligations, Rotundo disbanded his group in 1957. He resumed his career in the late 1960s, opening the performance venue La Casa de Rotundo. Rotundo died in Buenos Aires on September 26, 1997.
