Biography
Eugene Ellsworth Rousseau, born on August 23, 1932 in Blue Island, Illinois, was an American classical saxophonist. He made his radio debut at age 17 on Chicago's WGN and earned degrees from Chicago Musical College, Northwestern University, and the University of Iowa. After serving in the Army, Rousseau directed bands at Luther College and studied in Paris on a Fulbright Grant. He joined Indiana University School of Music faculty in 1964, teaching saxophone until 2000. During this time, he made numerous appearances as a clinician and soloist across the U.S. and internationally. His notable recordings include Saxophone Concertos (1971) with Deutsche Grammophon and Saxophone Vocalise (1995). He co-organized the first World Saxophone Congress in 1969 and served as President of both the North American Saxophone Alliance and the Comité International du Saxophone. He retired from teaching at the University of Minnesota in 2015 and died on August 26, 2024.
